If you’re not in the middle of any oppositions then you probably just got through some or your about to go through some. Opposition is part of this big wild life we are all living.
We have two choices when faced with opposition. We either let it take us out or we take it out.
Opposition can look like relationship problems, financial difficulties, self-sabotaging thoughts, sickness, setbacks and so much more. What are you facing right now??
Whilst doing an aid tour in Nepal a couple of years ago I was faced with an opposition of my own while walking across some vacant land. A bull locked eyes with mine and the stand off began. I was petrified. He started kicking his back legs and I started trembling not knowing what to do or where to go. Thankfully I escaped unharmed but I later found out that when a bull lines you up the best way to scare him off is to make yourself bigger than him. This freaks them out and they back right off.
TIP ONE when your facing opposition, make yourself bigger than that thing. You are magnificently capable of overcoming life’s greatest challenges and the moment you believe that and switch from scared to brave then your setting yourself up to be an overcomer.
Ralph Waldo Emerson said 'What we fear doing most is usually what we most need to do'
Bravery looks like:
Doing something that frightens you.
Looking fear right in the face, because bravery is not the absent of fear.
Confidence to conquer your inner anxieties.
A a great life not a moment.
Look at some of the greats that took on being brave to overcome their oppositions...
Helen Keller from a child was deaf, mute and blind and many believed she would never accomplish anything. However once she was shown how to communicate she spent her life writing books, lecturing and educating the world that people with disabilities could still be valuable to society. She was bigger then the opposition in front of her.
Joan of Arc was bigger then Britain and rallied the French troops to take them down. She changed history despite all the opposition that came her way.
Bethany Hamilton had a shark take her arm but yet she still has gone on to become one of the worlds greatest female surfers. Imagine if she let opposition take her out.
TIP TWO our mind is like a train, feed it with negative thoughts and it will take you someplace you don’t want to be. Feed it with positive thoughts then it will take you were you want to go. Turn your problem into an opportunity. Don’t focus on the opposition but on the victory on the other side of it.
If being brave and bigger then your opposition doesn't work for you or the power of a positive thinking then go to tip three...
TIP THREE name that opposition. Call it out and don’t accept it. Write it on a piece of paper. Now think of someone who you admire and who’s opinion you respect. Push that piece of paper to the other side of the table. Sit down and read it as if you were that person. What would they say? What advice would they give you?? Sometimes it is all a matter of perspective.
NOW REPEAT! Because once you overcome one you will be faced with another.
But theirs good news!
I recently read this very moving quote by historian Will Durand. This is what he said about his observation into his research on Rome.
‘Rome remained great as long as she had enemies who forced her to unity, vision and heroism. When she had overcome all her enemies she flourished for a moment and then began to die.’
Opposition kept Rome strong!
Sebastian Junger talks about this concept in his book ‘Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging.
‘Humans don’t mind hardship, in fact that thrive on it; what they mind is not feeling necessary. Modern society has perfected the art of making people not feel necessary. Its time for that to end’.
So I have one final thought… What if we were thankful for our oppositions? Because according to these guys we actually crave it and need opposition in our life.
As I think about the oppositions I have faced and I am facing I can see how they have actually been my breakthrough to the next level in the game of life. We don’t want to remain stagnant and i think maybe oppositions are just life’s way of showing us that we are moving forward.
Here's to more opposition and more wins in life brave one.
